Common Blackhead Removal Methods n Does Steaming get rid of Blackheads?!

Common Blackhead Removal Methods

Blackheads are the reasons you spend hours in front of the mirror trying to squeeze them out every other day, only to find that they grow back much bigger and darker each time. Blackheads are a combination of epidermis cells and accumulated oil sebum in the pore. After being exposed to the air, this combination gets oxidized and turns yellowish or blackish little bumps. Blackheads exist due to the pore's failure to drain off sebum; oil that naturally accumulates them. Once the pores are clogged up, bacteria from the ever-polluted environment take over and the end result....Blackheads!! Most people tend to have more blackheads on the nose area, as this is probably the oiliest part of the face. Blackheads are one of the most annoying skin blemishes as it takes patience to get rid of them. You have to treat them like kids, if you're harsh with them; they'd rebel, come back even stronger and harder to control. Take a step at a time and don't rush into the solution. Firstly, be aware of what NOT to do when you have blackheads.

What NOT to do when you have blackheads.

1. Squeezing Many people enjoy squeezing or popping nose blackheads. They either use their fingers or a blackhead extractor stick. This is NOT a recommended blackhead removal method, it's the last thing that you should do. This can get rid of blackheads, but definitely not a permanent solution. Squeezing causes serious damage to our delicate skin. The pressure from the squeezing causes skin irritation and may even lead to broken blood vessels around the area. The bacteria from our fingers may infect the pores and generate even more blackheads. The worst thing is when the pore expands and deepens into the skin, more oil will accumulate and this is why blackheads grow back much bigger after each squeeze.

2. Using a glue-based pore strip
I used to think that the Biore pore strip was the cure to blackheads. Little did I realize much later, that the glue residue on the skin after each usage clogged up the pores even further. Although these pore strips can be quite effective to a certain extent, they also come with a downside, the products' harshness. Anyone who has used one would be able to relate to this. The powerful ingredients of the glue-based pore strip can cause redness and irritation. Hence, resulting in more blackheads.

3. Using oil-based cosmetics
As blackheads are caused by excessive oil, using oil-based cosmetics or facial products will clogged up the pores even more. When purchasing skin care or sunscreens, go for non-comedogenic (means 'clog-free') or non-occlusive ingredients. When making your own skin care, the best choices of non-comedogenic oils include almond, olive, evening primrose, peanut and sunflower oils. Oils made from coconut, cocoa butter and wheat germ are considered very occlusive.

4. Scrubbing with harsh abrasives

Most people tend to believe that scrubbing the blackhead-prone area will ease the blockage caused by excessive oil. This is the biggest myth! Scrubbing the skin with facial brushs or facial scrubs will cause irritation, roughen skin, and rip off the skin's natural protective layer. This will also result in more production of sebum oil as replenishment on the skin's surface. Irritating your skin with harsh chemicals and special skin scrubbing cloths actually causes more blackhead problems because your skin reacts to these chemicals by trying to repair the damage you've done, clogging your pores with puss and naturally occurring oils.

Does Steaming get rid of Blackheads?!

Many people have asked if steaming the face helps get rid of blackheads. The answer is YES!

Steaming your face for 5 minutes helps to
1) Hydrate your skin
2) Soften your pores
3) Soften your internal clogged blackheads
4) Reduce scarring during blackhead extraction
5) Helps skin to tighten after blackhead extraction

The best time to steam your face is right before blackhead extraction, which is just before you apply the Blackhead Masque.

How you should steam your face.
1) Wash your face with facial cleanser
2) Place your head over a big bowl of hot water with your face down
3) Cover your head with a big towel
4) Make sure no steam escapes
5) Hold at this position for 5 minutes
6) You can occasionally take short breaths of fresh air if the steam is too hot to breathe
7) After 5 minutes, wipe dry face and proceed with application of the Blackhead Masque

If you have sensitive skin, you can alternatively place a warm towel over your face instead of placing your face over hot steam.
